Review Rules for the Journal of JAEE

1. Submission Categories

Journal papers shall be from a wide range of fields such as science, engineering, sociology, and humane studies, and they should contribute to the development of earthquake engineering and earthquake disaster reduction. For special editions, overviews/submissions shall be added to the category.

(1) Technical Papers

Summary of theory or proof that are novel, original, useful, reliable, or expansive.

(2) Technical Reports

Investigation reports on disaster/reconstruction or practice reports on design/construction/field measurement that are novel, useful, or reliable.

(3) Technical Notes

Budding tentative assumptions that can be expected to evolve significantly. Useful data, tables, charts, etc. that supplement technical papers or technical reports published in the past. Technical Notes also include reconnaissance reports that require urgency such as survey results of unexpected disasters.

(4) Discussions

Discussions regarding technical papers, technical reports and technical notes that were already published.

(5) Overviews/Invited Papers (Only for special issues)

Overviews shall be comprehensive summaries that encompass the research results related to the themes of the special issues, and touch upon the current research or future prospect. Invited papers shall be commentaries or essays on the themes of the special issues, or those which have no other applicable category.

2. Review Criteria

Materials that do not have political or propaganda intent shall be the subject of peer review.

For technical papers and technical reports, one of the following four judgments shall be made.

  1. Accepted in its present form: Although wording or simple corrections are needed, it is possible to publish it almost in its present form.
  2. Conditionally accepted: Although corrections are necessary for publication (such as obvious errors in expression or format, additional explanations), a second peer review is not required.
  3. Second review required: Corrections are necessary for publication, and a second peer review will be done to assess whether the appropriate corrections were made before judging its acceptance in its present form.
  4. Rejected: (i) Reason for rejecting the technical papers: It is not novel, original, useful, reliable, or expansive.) (ii) Reason for rejecting the technical reports: It is not novel, useful, or reliable.)

For technical notes, one of the following three judgments shall be made.

  1. Accepted in its present form: It is possible to publish it in its present form.
  2. Conditionally accepted: Although wording or simple corrections are needed, a second peer review is not required.
  3. Rejected (Reconnaissance reports: Reason for rejecting the data: It is not useful or reliable.)

For discussions, one of the following three judgments shall be made.

  1. Accepted in its present form: It is possible to publish it in its present form.
  2. Conditionally accepted: Although wording or simple corrections are needed, a second peer review is not required.
  3. Rejected: (Reason for rejecting the discussion: The argument is inappropriate, and there is an extreme lack of objectivity.)

For overviews/invited papers, a review is done to assess the appropriateness of publication, rather than to decide whether or not to publish it. One of the following three judgments shall be made.

  1. Accepted in its present form: It is possible to publish it in its present form.
  2. Conditionally accepted: Wording or simple corrections are needed.
  3. Rejected: (Reason for rejecting the submissions: The content deviates from the purpose of the special issue. Also, it includes extremely biased experiences or opinions.)

Supplementary Provisions

  • This rule shall be effective upon approval of authorization of JAEE as a public interest incorporated association by the Prime Minister.
  • The approval date is May 1, 2013.
