10th International Workshop on Seismic Microzoning and Risk Reduction: Second Circular

This Workshop is aimed to the exchange of the ideas and experiences on Engineering Seismology, Earthquake Engineering, Seismic Hazard and Risk Assessment, Earthquake Disaster Mitigation and Management and other related subjects applicable in urban area among seismologists, engineers, disaster mitigation planners, decision makers as well as representatives of the private sector through the discussion of methodologies and results.

  • About IWSMRR

    The first workshop was held in 1992 by Spanish and Japanese researchers on seismic microzoning at Granada, Spain. and then two meetings in Spain, Four more in Japan and one more in Spain. The 9th were executed in Cuernavaca, Mexico, 2010. For the 10th, Japan will host this international activities.

    • Currency and Money Exchange

      The unit of Japanese currency is yen. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen and bank notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen. You can buy yen at foreign exchange banks and other authorized money exchangers. At the international airports, currency exchange counters are usually open during normal office hours. The exchange rate fluctuates daily depending on the money market.

    • Drinking Water

      Tap water is safe to drink anywhere in Japan. Mineral water including major imported brands can be easily obtained from super markets, convenience stores and other similar places.

    • Hospitals

      Medical systems and facilities in Japan are well established so that you can expect to receive a high standard medical treatment, should you have a problem with your health during your stay.

    • Electricity

      The voltage used throughout Japan is uniformly 100 volts, A.C. There are two kinds of frequencies in use; 50 Hz in eastern Japan (including Tsukuba and Tokyo) and 60 Hz in western Japan. A convertible type of electrical appliance such as a hair dryer, travel iron and shaver will therefore be handy; otherwise a step-down transformer is required to convert the voltage. There are no columnar-shaped plugs or 3-pin plugs used in Japan but 2-flat-pin plugs are used instead. It is therefore advised to purchase a plug adapter beforehand.

    • Influence of the accident in the nuclear power plants in Fukushima Prefecture
      • Tsukuba is located about 165km away from the above mentioned nuclear power plants and have not suffered any direct influence of the explosions that took place in March 2011. Three institutes shown below in Tsukuba have monitored the radiation dose in the air. The effect of the accident has almost terminated until the end of April, 2011 and the dose has been stable since then. The second one of these three has stopped monitoring the radionuclides in April 8th, becuase almost none of radionuclides had been detected since April 4th. All these observations show that adults may not suffer any acute radiation syndrome during few days stay in Tsukuba.
      • In September 5, 2011, the dose rate at KEK was 0.08-0.10 (micro Sv/h) including the environmetal dose. The present dose rate is almost same as the environmental dose measured before March 11, 2011 (0.07-0.09 (micro Sv/h)).
      • Airbone Monitoring Survey by MEXT and Ibaraki Prefecture Corrected Version in August 31, 2011 showed that Tsukuba Science City was protected by the moutain range located at the eastern margin of the city from the radioactive falls brought by wind toward South West.
